Vanity's Emptiness

Neither player can Special Summon monsters. Destroy this card when a card is sent from the Deck or the field to your graveyard.

The "Trap Stun" of the format

Vanity's emptiness has shown strong appearance in the current meta-game, especially during dragon matchups. You can kind of view Dragons more as a passive aggressive deck. You summon bosses. You sit on resources and protect your blowout cards, and just go for game when you have huge momentum on the field. The format is highly based on whoever starts off with huge momentum early game, and its really unlikely for the opponent to come back when certain effects are resolved. One of these cards are Vanity's Emptiness. I like to call it, the trap stun of the format. Basically you establish your field presence and lock your opponent from being able to play for a turn, which most cases you end game the next couple of turns, or to just gain momentum.

I play Vanity's Emptiness in Dragons and all my other decks

In Dragon Rulers' case. Vanity has multiple uses. Since the format is predominantly Dragons, you want to always be able to outplay your opponent by making plays that nearly seal games or blowouts that seal games.

  • When your opponent tries to make a special summon after you have fielded strong plays you lock your opponent in a Dragon mirror.

  • When your opponent attempts to make a play while you have ravine on the field after making a strong play, you can play vanity. This essentially "stuns" your opponent for one turn. Bonus if you have ravine, you can just make your own plays and go for game.

  • When your opponent has a blow-out such as Return from a different dimension and you chain vanity to wreck your opponent.

Now at first you make think. Do these situations happen that much in dragon rulers? They do. Vanity is a blow-out card that gives you huge momentum when it is successfully resolved.

Fire Fist, Constellar, and Evilswarm run it too!

Dragons seem to put even more pressure on these decks tham it did last format. Why? Royal Decree, Raigeki Break, Phoenix Wing Blast, Return from the different dimension, Skill Drain, Sixth Sense, Mystical Space Typhoons, Fire Ferret, Divine Wrath are only the beginning of the bulk of sides use to counter dragon hate that all 3 decks have to offer. What do you do? You need more blowout cards to counter Dragons more permanently.

Fire fist have huge control by inflicting damage and setting up huge backrow to grind Dragons. The longer they can hold the duel, the more difficult it becomes for Dragons to end the game fast. Vanity helps as well as other lock cards such as Imperial Iron Wall.

Constellar is a bit stronger managing against dragons, and they do have strong XYZ that allows you to protect your backrow. Pleiades can loop any side card going to get destroyed back to the hand and re-set for next turn. Vanity is one of those cards. With good reads and calls, you can make sure your blowouts stay safe and end the game by locking E-dragons and making big hits with your XYZ.

Evilswarm are considered the anti-deck for E-dragons this format. They basically don't let E-dragons play. If E-dragons do get a chance to play, Evilswarms lose. "Would you rather lock your opponent out and not play, or get rid of the threats when played?" Evilswarms does mainly the 1st option. Vanity helps with this as if Ophion is eliminated, you can protect yourself with vanity. Don't forget the many cases of skill-drain being face-up on the field and you can use vanity when your opponent attempts to special summon to put pressure on ophion. Lastly, you can do Key Beetle Lock, which basically says. Vanity stays and you can't do anything about it. Its much easier to swing big for game here too.

Sensei I killed myself with vanity!

Vanity is a card that you have to play with good reads and judgment calls. If you play it incorrectly, you can really ruin yourself over. And cost you games as your opponent may have opportunities to game momentum and just wreck you when they want. You don't want to use it when your opponent attempts to special summon. You want to play it in situations where you absolutely need to, or seal up the game even more. When your opponent is low on resources using vanity gives you more of a momentum. Take note of what deck your playing against whether you need to play vanity in certain situations.

Extra tips and ruling knowledge on Vanity's Emptiness

From Wikia:

  • The self-destroying effect of this card activates when the card hits your Graveyard. It starts a Chain.

  • While Imperial Custom is active, this card will not be destroyed by its own effect.

  • If your Mystic Tomato is attacked and destroyed while Vanity's Emptiness is active, you cannot activate the effect of Mystic Tomato.

OCG Rulings

  • If an Xyz Material is sent to the Graveyard, that Xyz Material is not considered to be a card sent from the Deck or field to your Graveyard. Therefore, when an Xyz Material is sent to the Graveyard, a face-up "Vanity's Emptiness" is not destroyed.

  • While the effect of "Vanity's Emptiness" is applying, neither player can activate effects to Special Summon a monster. Therefore, you cannot activate the effect of "Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite". (You also cannot pay the cost.)

  • If a player controls "Vanity's Emptiness", and that player activates "Foolish Burial", the effect of "Foolish Burial" sends 1 monster from the Deck to the Graveyard, then after it resolves "Foolish Burial" itself is sent to the Graveyard. Therefore, the " Destroy this card when a card is sent from the Deck or the field to your Graveyard." effect of "Vanity's Emptiness" will activate twice on the same Chain. Also, if the effect of "Stardust Spark Dragon" is being applied to "Vanity's Emptiness", then at Chain Link 2 "Vanity's Emptiness" will not destroy itself, but at Chain Link 1 it will destroy itself.

My Explanation & Extra knowledge:

  • Vanity's Emptiness can not be activated during the damage step.

  • If you detach materials, Vanity will not be destroyed. For example : After making 2 Sack plays and setting Vanity, you can lock your opponent with tokens and beating down with sack. Tokens destroyed or tributed aren't counted as sent to the graveyard.

  • If vanity is flipped starting as chain link 1, and you chain a card such as mystical space typhoon to destroy another spell or trap, Vanity will not start a chain and destroy itself. It hasn't even resolved in the chain link yet.

  • Vanity's Emptiness is a counter-part to Vanity's Fiend and Vanity's Ruler.
