I'm excited to let you all know that we are going to be implementing a new war rating system to the forum. As we've all seen, the war section has blown up and grown to a size that has wars flying left and right. With this increase in activity, I have seen the need for a much more accurate rating system.
Enter...ELO RATINGS!
If you want to read up on the detailed math behind this system,
Why the new system?Currently, rating is determined very loosely by win-loss ratio. This, however, is not an accurate picture of how teams should be ranked. For example, a team could have a perfect record, but they might only be warring against weaker teams. Should they be 1st place? It's hard to tell if all you have to look at are win-loss ratios. In a war "league" as intricate as we have here, a little more detail is required to determine how teams should be ranked.
How are ELO Ratings different from the current system?Glad you asked
ELO ratings take two factors into account that win-loss does not:
Relative Strength: ELO takes into consideration the strengths of the teams that are matched up. If a lower ranked team wins against a higher ranked team, they will jump to a higher rating than if they played a weaker team.
Margin of Victory: ELO also takes into account how much each team won or lost by. A perfect 8-0 victory will earn the victor a much higher rating than an 8-5 victory, for example.
Ok so how does it work?Every team starts out with a rating of 1500. As they war, that rating is adjusted appropriately. After every war, I plug the results into an ELO calculator, and I get the result for the adjusted ELO ratings that each team will have.
Is there anything teams need to do to make this easier?YES. Every team needs to make sure their war histories are EASY to follow. Each win and loss contributes to your rating adjustment after the war, so it's important that it's easy for me to tell who won or lost a duel, and what team they're on. Color coordinating is a good way to do this.
I will be updating the ELO ratings as frequently as possible, so every team will know how they stand amongst the others. Eventually, I plan on giving EACH PLAYER an ELO rating so people can further see how they match up against other duelists.
I believe this new system will give a little more depth to wars in addition to giving more accurate ratings that we can base the play-offs off of. If there are any questions concerning this, please feel free to post and ask here!
