| Subject: Featured Card #12: Abyss Dweller Mon Jan 07, 2013 11:20 am | Why this card is so awesome: The release of Abyss Rising gave us some really strong monsters and a complete new set: Mermails. With the given fact that Mermails/Atlanteans rely on graveyard effects to either destroy cards or gain hand and fieldadvantage it is more than good that we have a card to counter that strategy significantly. This rank 4 XYZ is also very effective against Dark World decks since the most of their effects start off from the graveyard. The most positive thing about this card is that he's a pain for your opponent but it doesnt affects you at all. It doesnt conflict with your own effects and cuz it's a quick effect it can be activated in your opponents turn. The power up it recieves - +500 - ( also all the Water monster you control) when a material is underneath is water is massive. It can even be usefull in Mermailbuilds because for example your detached Atlantean Dragon Rider gets his effect. When this guy is on your side you dont have to worry about the plusses your opponent may have when for example Sangan or Card Trooper is destroyed! Other decks like Madolches, Fire Kings, T.G. variants and even Gravekeepers (Recruiter) are shut down. So basically the returning effects, discard and the effects of searchers and floaters are negated. Abyss Dweller has an Anti-Meta ability so it can easily fit in your extra deck and its not a waste of space at all!!! He is able to slow down grace-reliant decks for 2 turns so it gives you time to set your play up. This card is very usefull in a deck like Geargias to defend your set Geargiarmor since it struggles vs Mermails. Dweller in combo with a heavy backrow will give you just that protection you need! Dino Rabbit decks can easily go Laggia/Dolkka but even Dweller is a good option because thanks to Kabazauls you will recieve the +500 as mentioned above! The deck that benefits the most of this card are Wind-Ups...The popular OTK it can pull off ( Papilloperative+Zenmaity+Utopia+ Acid Golem) is now with Dweller instead of Utopia even able to make more damage than before!!! 9700 instead of 9100... Abyss Dweller is an awesome counter card to a couple of top tier decks and it makes some decks even better... For once Konami gave us an instant solution against the new OP stuff they made and in the same set... I'm a fan!!! PS: My knowledge of cards, rulings and also English isnt as good as others inhere but at least i try to give you guys some information. If you see errors or if i've overlooked things i would be happy if you correct/edit the post!!! |

There's only 1 thing I disagree with. You say that Abyss Dweller is best in Wind-Ups because it makes an OTK even more... er... OTK? (lol)
Abyss Dweller IS a great card in Wind-Ups, but only because Mermails are a tough matchup and because they have Shark to actually make it a good 2200 ATK monster. That 1700 ATK is so unimpressive that any Deck that doesn't fear Mermails or Dark World, or has no backrow to back this card up, should stay away from Abyss Dweller.
As a matter of fact, more often than not, WU players prefer to go Shock Master over that OTK because it shuts down Gorz/Tragoedia/Fader/Scarecrow, as well as your opponents next turn (most likely). If they have Magician + Shark and backrow to back it up, it's even more wise to go Shock Master and call Spells. The OTK is a risky move that should not be performed unless you are certain of your win. In which case that 700 ATK doesn't add much lol. |

Shock Master shuts down Mermail/atlanteans even more and is also easy to make, so it's not mandatory in the deck. Abyss Dweller is a great card against DW and M/A but the attack points are so low even dragon rider normal summoned can overpower it. So I'd add that it needs backrow to be really effective. |

@ And nick, shockmaster is beter just cause of diva but most of times u wont make it and dewler is more easy to do it also, dweler can be superrrrrr anoying vs mermails and dw just by the fact u use the efect when u want, and shockmaster u have just 3turns to use it, while that dweler can control the game while they dnt waste cards in grave. |

And what you said about Plants, that's so situational that that alone wouldn't warrant Dweller a spot in WU decks, especially since they already have a really tight Extra. It's all the other reasons that make Dweller a staple in Wind-Ups, the extra damage for a situational OTK is just a bonus. |

You actually still can still chain Abyss Dweller's effect [as chain link 2 or higher] to an effect which was activated in the grave, after all this is a quick effect which can be chained during opponent's turn. Though as you mentioned, the opponent had already activated the card in the grave, so it will not be stopped by Abyss Dweller's effect. But by no means does this require that you use it exclusively during your opponent's standby phases. Take for example you play a Dark World deck, they activate dragged down or another one of their spells [as chain link 1], you can chain Abyss dweller effect [as chain link 2]. Resolving the chain: Abyss Dweller will resolve first, thereby preventing any activations in the grave; then the chain link 1 spell's effect resolves & where the opponent discards their Dark World monster. Once the Dark World monster is discarded and hits the grave, then their trigger effect would usually activate at this point, but since Abyss Dweller was already resolved, the DW monster won't get get a chance to activate its effect in the grave. There's plenty of other situations in which Abyss Dweller can be chained, just gotta know exactly when to do it. I personally see Abyss Dweller as one of the XYZs in my arsenal that I'd consider as a near Staple to the majority of my extra decks that can XYZ summon it. There's so many of the popular decks out right now in the TCG which abyss dweller can majorly slow down if used correctly. |
